ELECTRICITY FEEDER PILLER BOXES VANDALIZED – JALAN LINTAS SIBUGA STREETLIGHTS BLACKED OUT

SANDAKAN: Another brazen vandalizing of electricity feeder piller boxes has occurred in the district, this time along a section of Jalan Lintas Sibuga leading to the Batu Sapi area.

The thieves ripped open 2 feeder piller boxes and stole all their vital components.

In early November, a similar incident had occurred at Mile 10, Sungai Batang Road, which leads to Sandakan’s Educational Hub. “These irresponsible and shameless vandals and thieves must be stopped.

The vandals have caused damage costing thousands of ringgit to repair and replace, not to mention the inconvenience and danger for motorists and other road users, especially at night,” Head of the Sandakan Municipal Council Highway and Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) Taren Sunil Manoharan said.

Their action also exposed dangerous ‘live wires’ that could have electrocuted any unsuspecting passerby, especially curious children. Luckily no one came into contact with them, he added.

“The feeder piller boxes control and distribute electricity to each individual lamppost along the road. With two boxes pried open and components stolen, 15 streetlights along a stretch of Jalan Lintas Sibuga were affected causing them to black out,” said Taren Sunil Manoharan.

The HPUC team will look into the feasibility of using smaller piller boxes that could be protected by a cover of metal grille to discourage tampering, he added.

“A police report will be made about the incident,” Taren Sunil said.
