TUARAN: Sabah Lotud Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomes the widespread calls for the federal government to implement the issuance of new MyKads.
The Lotud chamber’s president, Pediman Jabau, said in a statement here that such an undertaking is long overdue and should have been carried out long before the problem of illegal immigrants in Malaysia has become so serious.
Pediman, who is a prominent businessman among the Lotud community here, and is also a recipient of multiple state awards as a successful entrepreneur, is calling for the federal government to listen to the appeals of the many parties and segments of the Malaysian people to undertake the national IC reissuance as soon as possible.
“It must be recognised that the people are extremely worried for the economic wellbeing and security of the country as a whole,” he said.
“At the moment the feeling of alarmed is felt most acutely in the Peninsula due to the presence of hundreds of thousands of undocumented Rohingnya illegal immigrants and undocumented workers who are currently unemployed due to the movement control order.
“Alongside this is the problem of a huge number of Chinese tourists who have ‘disappeared’ in Malaysia,” Pediman added.
“The Attorney General’s report says that between 2016 and 2018, 76,258 or 95.6 percent of Chinese tourists who entered Malaysia had no records of having ‘exited’ the way that they had came in.
“Additionally between 2017 and, 39,806 or 96.5 per cent of Indian tourists had no exit records either. By calculation these figures mean that no less than 35 ‘tourists’ go missing and are unaccounted for every day,” he added.
Pediman also express shock from watching viral videos of Kuala Lumpur streets being flooded with Rohingyas and Bangladeshis who stroll around with total disregard for traffic laws.
Pediman, however, is glad that the Peninsular Malaysians are now have developed an acut awareness of the problem of illegal immigrants which has been a deep socio-political concern in Sabah since the 1970s, but had never been properly addressed by the federal government.
He said that within the Tuaran district the Lotud people have long been deeply worried about the presence of immigrants from the Philippines and Indonesia, many who have overtaken Lotud businesses at the tamus, are selling smuggled cigarettes while others have bought lands and built houses by proxy.
“We all feel that there is a serious case of injustice and we are worried about our place in our community’s future,” Pediman lamented.
“As such, we see that the clarion calls for the reissuance of MyKads as a hope to remedy these longstanding problem. At least the exercise will weed out fake and illegally issued ICs, and give the people confidence in the seriousness of the federal government in building a just, harmonious and progressive Malaysian society.”http://beritasabah. com
