SANDAKAN: Sabah Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Frankie Poon has urged Sandakan Municipal Council to reconsider its decision to implement parking fee to cover 11 satellite townships.
Poon who is also Tanjong Papat Assemblyman expressed concern the current economic situation in Sandakan is not good and therefore it is not the right time to impose parking fees in the extended areas.
He was commenting on news reports that Sandakan Municipal Council was waiting for approval from the Sabah Ministry of Local Government and Housing regarding its proposal to widen its jurisdiction to more parking spaces here beginning August 1.
“The imposition of parking fees will certainly not help the Sandakan economy as it discourages people from coming down or coming out, particularly to town centre which will eventually have an adverse impact on business and economic,” Poon said.
Poon hoped Sandakan Municipal Council would reconsider its decision given the current economic scenario in Sandakan and defer it until visible improvement to the Sandakan’s economy.
“I believe and trust Minister of Sabah Local Government and Housing understands the business climate in Sandakan and will be sympathetic and considerate when making a final decision on the parking fees proposal,” Poon said.
