SANDAKAN: Members of the Sandakan Municipal Council’s Highway and Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) have turned their attention to the problems faced by residents of Taman Sejati Ujana Sandakan by visiting their area for an inspection recently.

Taren Sunil Manoharan, Said Rasul and Rosly Aziz were among those who met with the residents there to hear their complaints.

“As usual, the problem of blocked drains was one of the issues we discussed with the affected residents,” said Taren Sunil the Head of HPUC.

“We certainly understand the smelly and unhygienic conditions due to blocked drains and we will approach the Drainage and Irrigation Department to seek their help clear up the problem,” added Taren Sunil.

However, as common with similar problems in other areas that they have visited, Taren Sunil said that the indiscriminate throwing of rubbish into drains was one of the common causes of the problem. He pointed to the plastic bottles, packaging and even an old clock in one of the drains at Taman Sejati Ujana.

“Compounding the problem was a collapsed culvert that interrupted water flow,” noted Taren Sunil.

He assured the residents that he will bring these issues to the relevant authorities. He also advised residents to refrain from throwing rubbish into drains.

“HPUC and the Drainage and  Irrigation Department have a good working relationship and we regularly cooperate to help address problems faced by the residents of Sandakan,” he said.
