PBS: Restore ban on pump boats

Parti Bersatu Sabah President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili speaking to participants of a workshop on economic opportunities for PBS N4 Matunggong at Kampung Toporoi on Wednesday.

MATUNGGONG: Recent kidnappings in waters off Lahad Datu are strong indications that the ban on the use of pump boats must be restored in Sabah.

Parti Bersatu Sabah President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the police had confirmed that the recent kidnappings was implicated due to the use of pump boats.

“This is a threat to our security. Why does the police need to re-study the use of pump boats when they have confirmed that it was used in the recent kidnappings?

“Just ban the use of pump boats, just like what the previous government had done. Before, the ban on pump boats were also based on the advice from the security agencies, which was later approved by the Sabah Security Council. Lifting the ban (by the Warisan-led government) has proven that it had jeopardised the state’s and its people’s security,” he stressed in his speech when closing the workshop on economic opportunities for PBS N4 Matunggong at Kampung Toporoi, here, today.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal had asked him to re-study the use of pump boats, after masked gunmen had used them to approach two fishing vessels and escaped with the trio and their boat to the Tawi-Tawi chain of islands in the southern Philippines.

The Kota Marudu Member of Parliament added that both the security and government agencies must play a proactive action to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur.

“But even the National Registration Department is not trustworthy. Too many falsifying cases and some officers were arrested in Semporna. So we hope stern actions are taken against them,” he said.

He added that the State is in haywire and will continue to be so for as long as Sabah is governed by the wrong people.

“We feel that our rights are pawned to the foreigners. Please protect the State rights and save Sabahans from further destruction,” he said.
