The Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) held the 5th Southeast Asian Natural Resources and Environmental Management International Conference (SANREM2021) recently.
Organising committee chairperson, Prof. ChM. Dr. How Siew Eng says the online international conference event explores various aspects and dimensions of natural resources and environmental management issues in the Southeast Asia region.
“This conference focuses on three areas: humans and environment co-existent; environmental technology and environmental conservation; and the diversity of healthy life and ecosystem.
“These areas are particularly relevant to the integration of natural resources and environmental management in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” she said in a statement here today.
Also present during the conference were the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Prof. Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin, the Dean of FSSA, Prof. Dr. Jualang @ Azlan Abdullah Gansau and the former Dean, Prof. Dr. Baba Musta.
According to How Siew Eng, the SANREM 2021 was attended by participants from different countries, including Malaysia, China, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, and India.
“With a total of three keynote speakers, eight plenary speakers, 59 presenters, and 16 participants, SANREM 2021 integrates people from different backgrounds and unites in this scientific gathering.
“The strong responses to the call of this conference is a demonstration of supporting advancements in sustainability and enabling individuals and organisations to make significant changes.
“It is for sustaining and improving the natural resources and environment through research collaboration establishment, discussion and sharing of informative and innovative issues and ideas, and creating and spiraling the awareness of sustainable development goals in the Southeast Asia region,” she added.
Meanwhile, Taufiq, in his opening remarks, said that the conference was a platform in which participants will present papers, exchange and discuss ideas, network for future research collaborations, publish research works, and find out what’s new.

“I sincerely wish this conference will achieve its objective, and, in my view, there is no better way to ensure our response to the call for sustainable development is truly meaningful than to involve the stakeholders we aim to serve.
“This has the importance that the knowledge we generate, the innovations we come up with, and the technology we develop should go towards uplifting the lifestyles of the stakeholders we serve.
“The outcomes of this conference will therefore have no meaning unless they reach the end-users or are put to practical use,” he said.
The three-day conference was officiated by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Sabah, Datuk Haji Yakub Khan.
