SANDAKAN: Members of the Sandakan Municipal Council Highway and Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) led by Taren Sunil Manoharan recently paid a courtesy call on Frazer Duing, the Sandakan District Engineer of the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID).
Taren Sunil said that the meeting was part and parcel of HPUC’s efforts to coordinate and cooperate with the various Government departments and agencies to jointly help look into ways of solving issues faced by the residents of Sandakan.
“We had very fruitful talks on how to jointly tackle local problems. In fact we recently teamed up with DID to look into flash floods at the Sungai Anib area,” said Taren Sunil.
We also discussed recent flooding issues at Sungai Mamanjang and Sungai Gum Gum. For a start we were asked to advise residents not to build their houses too near the rivers as such structures make it very difficult to carry out de-silting work. The necessary machinery and equipment will not be able to move into place to do the job, Taren Sunil added.
Prior to this meeting, the HPUC team had also made similar courtesy calls to the District Engineer of JKR Sandakan and the Director of the Duchess of Kent Hospital.
“For the sake of the people of Sandakan, HPUC believes that it is much more effective when all Government departments and agencies pool their efforts together to get things done. People want to see their problems solved in the shortest possible time and we aim to do just that,” Taren Sunil summed up, while conceding that certain bigger issues will take time to resolve.
