MADIUS: STATE ASSEMBLY TO CONTINUE

KOTA KINABALU: The ongoing Sabah State Legislative Assembly sitting, which was declared opened by the Tuan Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin last Thursday, will continue on Monday and Tuesday beginning at 10.00 morning as per scheduled earlier.

“The State Cabinet had deliberated on the legal implications of the sitting before we proceeded with the assembly; we have also considered the view of the Attorney General. It will be held as scheduled,” said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau.

The sitting was necessary, among others, so as to fulfil the requirements of the State Constitution and to get approvals for urgent supplementary bill expenses in lieu of the pandemic caused by the COVID-19.

Madius, who is also the government chief whip, said in reality the sitting is equivalent to only one day because they convene for two and a half hours per day.

“We have exercised social distancing; we will continue to ensure there are less than 50 persons in the Dewan at any one time and we will ensure all the necessary precautions are taken,” he added.

He said this to the media who asked him to comment on calls by several sectors including from former chief minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee for the State to call off the remaining sessions.

“Perhaps they (including Datuk Yong) can also advise the Federal Government as to how the Parliament sitting can be held in May if the Movement Control Order is still implemented,” said Madius partly in jest./BERITA SABAH
