Masing death is a big loss, says Madius

United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau described Tan Sri James Jemut Masing, who died today, as a respected veteran politician.

In expressing his condolences to Masing’s family, he said the politician has brought about great improvement to the lives of Malaysians.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Jemut Masing this morning. His death is a big loss.

“Masing was an eminent leader, a respected veteran politician, and a friend to many during his three-decade-long career, serving in three ministries and as Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak.

“Having known him ever since we met while working as researchers at the Institute for Development Studies (Sabah) IDS in 1988.

“He was indeed a close friend of mine. He was then a visiting researcher in IDS,” he said in a statement, according to New Strait Times.

Madius also said the death of Masing was a great loss to Sarawak and the country.

“His passing is truly a great loss to the people of Sarawak and the nation and the Dayak community in particular.

“I offer my deepest condolences to Masing’s family, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, and the people of Sarawak,” he said.

Masing, who tested positive for Covid-19 in September, died at a private hospital here at 7 am today.

He was 72.
