KOTA KINABALU:  More repair and renovation projects will be carried out as part of the ongoing City Beautification Programme from this month (August).

Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Christina Liew said the proposed works will be executed, utilising her Assemblywoman Fund.

“Kota Kinabalu is the gateway to Sabah. It is incumbent upon all stakeholders and city dwellers to play an active role in projecting a good image of the city to international visitors and tourists.

“As such, maintaining public cleanliness should be our priority, apart from ridding the city of any urban blight or eyesore such as disused public telephone booths within the central business district (CBD),” she said after a site inspection of completed and ongoing works as well as other spots that warranted attention.

These included Sadong Jaya, the Malaysia Monument, bus shelters in the KK waterfront area along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, and the bin centres in a state of disrepair within the Gaya Square. There are new tiles for a 500-metre stretch of Jalan Ikan Juara in Sadong Jaya while work on giving the monument a face-lift is in progress.

Liew, who is also Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, was accompanied by Api-Api Community Development Leader (PPM), Grace Lee who briefed the former on the progress of works.

Also present were Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) Traffic & Transportation Department’s engineer Saiman Angak, assistant engineers Terry James and Durie Juneh, and officer Roger Y. Kawanding.

The Minister said some 20 old road signage within the perimeters of the city will be replaced with new ones while signboard structures will be replaced at Kg Air and Bandaran Berjaya.

“In addition, road railings along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Kemajuan will be re-painted. We are also looking into the need to fix more durable flexible posts along a stretch of the road divider (at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens) bordering the local fruits market, night food market, KK Handicraft Market and Pasar Malam Sinsuran. The move is to resolve traffic woes caused by illegal parking,” she explained, adding that missing flexible posts will be replaced at Lorong Kemajuan, Lorong Damai and Lorong Bahasa.

According to Liew, nine existing bus-shelters will have new solar panels and light bulbs installed while their polycarbonate roofing will be changed, using aluminium carbon material. These are located behind Horizon Hotel, near the KK Post Office, at Wisma Bandaraya, KK waterfront, KK Central Market, old KK City Library area, Wisma Karamunsing and in the vicinity of the Menumbok and Kudat bus-station as well as SRK Sacred Heart, respectively.

The Api-Api Assemblywoman has also requested that the two “dirty, unsightly and unhygienic” bin centres within the Gaya Square be renovated with new dumpsters and solar lights installed.

Thirty-three disused public telephone booths will be removed from Segama (7), Wisma Merdeka (2), Kg Air (10), Centre Point Sabah (12) and City Park (2).

Meanwhile, Liew disclosed that the slope damage at Taman Sunny Garden will be rectified and a 38-metre long fencing wall will be built in the affected area.
