TAMAN RAJAWALI SANDAKAN GETS ATTENTION OF SMC’s TOWN CLEANING UNIT, HPUC AND CONTRACTOR

Drain in Taman Rajawali lacking maintenance

SANDAKAN: Residents of Taman Rajawali at Mile 7, Sandakan, recently received prompt attention when they informed Bryan Chang of the Highway and Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) of the multiple blocked drains and waterways plaguing their housing estate.

Following the report, Chang carried out an inspection of the drains at Taman Rajawali together with representatives from Sandakan Municipal Council’s Town Cleaning Unit and the contractor to assess the situation. They started at Lorong 16 of Taman Rajawali and moved from place to place to get a good look at the outstanding issues.

They found that the drains at Taman Rajawali have been badly neglected. Many of them were totally blocked with all sorts of trash. A few of the drains were in fact almost totally hidden under masses of long overgrown grass that obviously has not been cut for a long time.

Soon after the inspection, Sandakan Municipal Council’s Town Cleaning Unit began the cleanup of several drains. This immediate measure will be followed by long term solutions where the contractor will repair collapsed drains and damaged culverts. In fact they have already started work on these issues. There will be a whole lot of work to clear the drains and waterways of silt and mud that has accumulated over the years.

SMC’s Town Cleaning Unit has also cleared the blocked drains near the mosque at Taman Rajawali. Other maintenance work like grass cutting will also be carried out on a regular basis.

Chang, who is also a Sandakan Municipal councillor, said that he and his team as well as other local authorities involved will follow up on the work from time to time to ensure that everything necessary is being done to clear up and repair all the drains at Taman Rajawali. They will also ask their contractors to look into repairing the roads where needed.

Chang expressed his appreciation to members of the public, including residents of housing estates, for their cooperation in helping inform Sandakan Municipal Council as well as their elected representatives of their problems.

“Since SMC and HPUC have limited manpower, we welcome feedback from the public to inform us of problems that affect the community. Together with our elected representatives and other local authorities we will do our best to lessen their problems,” Chang reassured.
