SANDAKAN: During a joint visit to the area with Highway and Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) members, Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong has expressed his hope that there will be no delay in work on the flood mitigation and river realignment of Sungai Anib.
“Calvin wants the work on the flood management system to be carried out as scheduled without any further delay,” said Taren Sunil, the head of HPUC.
Early last month, members of the Sandakan Municipal Council’s HPUC had visited the area together with representatives of the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to find ways to mitigate the problem of flash floods in the area.
“Calvin was pleased that site preparation for the job is ready and the actual work by the DID will start soon. He hoped that after the job is completed, the residents there will have less worry about flash floods during heavy rain,” said Taren Sunil.
Apart from dredging the blocked waterway to remove silt and rubbish, Sungai Anib will be concreted and realigned for better river management.
Calvin and his team as well as HPUC expect the DID to complete the work soon.

However, they also advised residents to stop dumping rubbish into Sungai Anib or even near the river because the trash will sooner or later be washed into the river by rain and again result in blockage and floods.
“We ask for cooperation from everyone to keep Sungai Anib and its surrounding area clean. We can’t be asking the DID to be cleaning up all the time for other people’s bad habits,” said Taren Sunil.
