TAWAU: Direct flights between China and Tawau will only commence in January next year.
The scheduled flight originally scheduled to begin next month had to be postponed as the approval process as involved Wisma Putra, said Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) Senior Commercial Services General Manager, Mohammad Nazli Abd Aziz.
Mohammad Nazli said Hainan Airlines will be operating a twice weekly flight using B737-800 aircrafts which can accommodate up to 180 passengers.

“Officials from China have come to look at our airport and other facilities and we have provided relevant data and the Tawau Airport can accommodate the aircraft,” he added.

Tawau’s tourism industry is set to boom and will be the main gateway to Sabah for China tourists with the direct flights. The district will experience rapid growth just like in Langkawi, Mohammad Nazli said.

Mohammad Nazli was speaking to the media at the “Majlis Mesra Raya Aidil Fitri” organised by Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB) at the Tawau Airport on Thursday.
Also present was MASB Tawau manager Hasbi Mohd Said.— (NEW SABAH TIMES)
