SANDAKAN SWIMMER LOO YIE BING WINS SIX MEDALS IN CAMBODIA

SANDAKAN : Sandakan swimmer Loo Yie Bing won an astonishing 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze in the recently concluded South East Asia’s Age Group Swimming Competitions in Phnom Penh , Cambodia. 

The competition was held at the Morodok National Stadium and participated by 947 swimmers from the 10 ASEAN countries from June 28 to 30.

The Malaysian contingent, which was represented by 29 members returned with 7 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze medals and placed 6th in the overall standing behind Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Philippine and Indonesia.

Twelve-year-old Yie Bing, being the youngest member of the team, took 2 gold medals from the girls’ 100m freestyle with a time of 59.39s as well as a team gold in the mixed Under-18 medley relay with national teammates Alicia Ann Soosai (Johore), Bryan Leong (KL) and  Steve Khiew Hoe Yean (KL).

She also snatched home two silvers in the individual 50m freestyle and the Under-18 mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay with Hii Puong Wei (Sarawak), Steve Khiew Hoe Yean (KL) and Lim Shun Qi (Selangor), as well as two bronzes in the individual 50m breaststrokes and 4 x 100m women relay with teammates Liew Chern Xin (Selangor), Lim Shun Qi (Selangor) and Goh Chia Tong (Melaka).

Yie Bing was selected by the national body after she qualified for the time set by Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) in the Malaysia National Age Group (NAG) held in March this year at Bukit Jalil.

She is trained by former Malaysia Olympian swimmer, and current Sabah swimming head coach Elvin Chia and SSA Chairman, former Sabah state swimmer Derek Chui.

Yie Bing has expressed her gratitude to both coaches for their contribution to her development and achievement.
