SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council Highway and Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) and the Drainage and Irrigation Department have begun checking on the state of water retention ponds around Sandakan.
The team recently made their rounds at the IJM area at Mile 6, Sandakan.
“We decided to check the condition of these retention ponds all over Sandakan as many of them seemed to have been left alone and not properly maintained over the years,” said Taren Sunil Manoharan, Head of HPUC Taren Sunil Manoharan.
“These ponds serve an important function for water management. As such we will be going around Sandakan to ensure that they are properly maintained,” he added.
According to Taren Sunil, SMC has to clear these ponds and the Drainage and Irrigation Department has been helping SMC with the task.
“To ensure proper maintenance, HPUC will come up with a scheduled plan for the upkeep of these retention ponds,” he said.
