SANDAKAN: Fresh from the success of the just concluded Sandakan Regatta / Sandakan River Race/ Sabah Closed, plans are underway to invite more international teams for the 2020 edition of the event.
Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) commodore Joseph Soong disclosed this in his address during the prize presentation and closing ceremony on Sunday.
Being one of the oldest yacht clubs in the country whereby one of the objectives for its establishment is to promote sailing, maritime and other sports, we hope to be able to continue with this tradition, Soong said.
“We are no stranger to the world of sailing with proven track record of having produced sailors who have gone on to bring glory to both Sabah and the country,” Soong said.
Soong hoped with the continued support from Sabah Sailing Association, SYC is exploring the possibilities of holding more sailing programmes to further promote the sport not only amongst members’ children but also schoolchildren in the district with the collaboration of the relevant authorities.
“We are looking into giving this annual regatta which is endorsed by Sabah Sailing Association (SAILA) as a ranking event for Sabah State Sailors, a more international flavour by inviting teams from Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Indonesia and other parts of Malaysia next year,” Soong said.
This year’s regatta saw 52 sailors taking part with two foreign participants from the Brunei Sailing Association with another four members involving in the technical team, Soong said.
“The Sandakan Regatta/ Sandakan River Race is the final event of SAILA Annual Sailing Calendar where the Best Optimist Sailors of Sabah will be decided at the end of the regatta,” he added.
